SOLICITATION LETTER: Books for Lavezares

February 2008
To You, Our Very Good Friend:
Mabuhay!
Lavezares is a fifth class municipality in the Province of Northern Samar, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 23,991 people in 4,637 households (wikipedia.org), and a total land area of 119.5 sq. km. It is 248 kms. from Tacloban City, the city capital of Eastern Visayas (Region
(evis.net).
Lavezares has elementary schools in each of the 26 barangays; four secondary high schools (3 private and a public); and a tertiary private institution. Even with the presence of these schools, it has no municipal library at the present time, where research should be done by our students and teachers or simply reading a national daily/novel for some.
In answer to this problem, I, together with other concerned youth of my municipality, have tasked ourselves to take this ambitious but noble initiative of establishing a library for Lavezares, with the end goal of encouraging Lavezares people especially the youth to read books.
Moreover, we pursue the project because we are inspired by the remarks, which I would like to share with you in this letter, of some great individuals about books.
The famous William Shakespeare (1564-1616) of England, once, said, “‘Tis the mind that makes the body rich” while, French philosopher Rene′ Descartes (1596-1650), likewise, said, “The reading of good books is like a conversation with the finest men of past centuries.”
”Without books, the development of civilization would have been impossible. They are the engines of change, windows on the world, “lighthouses,” as the poet said, “erected in the sea of time.” They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in print” as to Barbara Tuchman (1912-1989) of United States.
It is in this connection that we come to you to solicit book/s you can share to us. You may donate any of the following:
• Textbook (for College courses, High School, Elementary and Pre-school)
• Magazine (Times, Reader’s digest, National Geographic, etc.)
• Journal (Nursing Research, etc.)
• Novel (preferably English)
• Science Fiction and Non-science fiction books
• Other References (such as Encyclopedia)
OR
• Educational Audio-visual material
We would like to inform you that we discourage any monetary donations. Only book/s or educational audio-visual material.
We are encouraging donors to please fill-up the Acknowledgment Receipt (the other half should be sent to us), which was attached in this letter. You may send it together with the book/s to:
